Although I'd suggest that Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther, published in 1774, certainly provided a blueprint of the romantic nonsense to come. Why Napoleon liked the book is beyond me--Werther should have been drowned at birth, saving us all from wanting to slap him silly. Give me a guy in a uniform who cusses.
