In one of the debates in April 1793 during the crisis caused by Dumouriez the idea of the representatives was adopted and it was suggested that they should have a uniform (probably to keep up with the generals) and that David should design it. David's first response was that these distinctions between citizens were un-revolutionary but ('Oh all right, if you really insist) he began enthusastically making suggestions. Voice from the back row: "When you've quite finished with the toilette of our representatives perhaps we can get back to saving the country!"
