Naval Fiction’s Influence on naval social history

Tom,
Read this article with very great interest.
I'm a big fan of Rodger and O'Brian.

Historians, such as Michael Lewis and Nicholas Rodger, influenced Forester and O’Brian as much as these men influenced them. A symbiotic relationship exists between naval fiction and naval history. Patrick O’Brian’s novels continue to exert their influence upon the social history of the navy.

Quite by chance, I managed to buy a second hand copy of N. A. M Rodger, The Wooden World: An Anatomy of the Georgian Navy (New York: W.W. Norton & Company, 1986) this week end.
A seminal book and required reading.
Can anyone suggest a French equivalent?
Best wishes
A
