In the Prussian army, there wasn't even a bayonet scabbard, as bayonets were fixed to the musket at any time.
Of course, there was no training for fightig with the bayonet. When it came to a melee, in 1813-15 Prussian soldiers often prefered to turn their muskets and use the butt as a club. Probably, as most came from the countryside, they were used to beating this way from threshing in their villages. However, I believe, with bayonet fixed, you can easily hurt yourself if you use the butt of the musket as a club. Still, I haven't come accross any reference that this caused auto-inflicted wounds, or that the bayonets were removed before clubbing.
