As I understand it, promoted NCOs were sent to another unit, to prevent friction between them and their former NCO colleagues, and with the rank-and-file generally.
Ditto that it was normal for infantry battalions to promote an ex-sergeant to Adjutant, because of his involvement with the training of all ranks. Was this also true of cavalry units, and was there a difference in attitude towards ex-ranker officers shown by infantry and cavalry officers?
