Re: West Kent Militia
In Response To: Re: West Kent Militia ()

At the risk of derailing the thread slightly, volunteer clothing was much more centrally controlled after 1803 than had been the case in the 1790s. According to my notes, a circular was issued by the Home Office in June 1803 regarding uniforms. Unfortunately I can't find where I got that reference from -- it's been a good 15 years since I looked into this in any detail, and my notes are a little dispersed -- but I did find this letter addressed to William Windham of 5 Nov 1803, British Library Add MS 37882, ff. 4-5, giving details: "I understand that Red is the fix'd Uniform for all Volr. Corps, except, Rifle Corps which may be Dress'd in Green, but that no other Colour not even Blue (except for Cavalry) will be allowed."

Presumably facings were at the discretion of the colonel, of course.
