The area of action is on the Waal downstream of Nijmegen The 8e Hussards (formerly 9th) are in the frame, as they were evidently on the Waal as part of Pichehgru's Armée du Nord, having distinguished themselves at Boxtel and Bois le Duc and appear to have been active in the French probes north either side of the New Year period. The sources are a little contradictory as to whether the 8th were with Delmas' 6e Division, Salme's 4e, or, as Lahure states, in 'Macdonald's brigade'- although by January 1795 Macdonald was in provisional command of Souham's division and attached brigades.

It is curious that one regiment in particular should be singled out as 'hussars of the Vendee' since several seem to have achieved notoriety in that campaign.
