Colonel Savarin?

Dear All,

I have been researching the Battle of Paris 30 March 1814, which is a rather obscure event considering its vast political significance at the end of the 1814 campaign.

The Allies assaulted the French redoubts on the hill of Monmarte three times before taking them. These were defended by a small unit of about 400 Young Imperial Guardsmen and 500 National Guardsman (Garde Nationaux de Paris). This garrison was valiantly led by one Savarin, who defiantly proclaimed that he would never surrender, despite the musket cartridges running out, as long as they had their bayonets. The position was only overwhelmed when Langeron deployed huge numbers of infantry against it.

The trouble with most of my sources is that Savarin is usually referred to only by his surname. Some record his rank as Colonel but others as major. None of them record his Christian name. Can anyone help?

Regards,

David
