I have read many accounts of reviews during this period, both French and English. The commander conducting the review may use the occasion as he wishes. He may want to assure himself that the men are being correctly paid, fed, administered. He may have some of them answer questions about the administration of their units, open their packs for inspection, if it is a cavalry unit, he wound check the state of saddlery and harness, horses health, fit of the saddle and so on.
