Hi Richard

Don't forget that the cuirass is only shown for the Garde Kurassiers, not the line.

The question of whether or not the regiment actually wore the cuirass is discussed by Dr F. G. de Wilde, in his excellent book 'De uniformen van het Nederlandse leger ten tijde van de Bataafse Republiek en het Koninkrijk Holland 1795-1810' (Amsterdam: De Bataafsche Leeuw, 1999), pp. 152-6. He notes that several French uniform experts have argued that the regiment never wore the cuirass. He then quotes two decrees:

29 November 1808: cuirasses will not be worn on escort duty (bij escortes)

12 October 1809: The entire regiment will be dressed in the undress uniform (het kleine tenue) of theLijfwacht te Paard. The cuirasses will be given to the 2nd Regiment Kurassiers

He then goes on to cite Dumonceau's memoirs, which refer to the helmets and cuirasses of officers having gilded ornaments (arabesken) and reproduces the portrait of Rittmester Calkoen

Not conclusive, but the best I can do - perhaps one of the real experts on Dutch uniforms can help.
