Strasbourg was the site not only of a military garrison, but of an artillery school as well as a foundry. Jean Maritz, one of Gribeauval's partners in the development of his new artillery system, was the foundry master in Strasbourg and artillery tests were conducted there in 1763, the Duc de Choiseul, Minister of War and patron of Gribeauval and the new light artillery sytem being introduced, told Gribeauval that 'His Majesty intends that you not be bothered by anyone and have all the authority necessary.'
There were several artillery schools in France during this period, and included Strasbourg, Metz and La Fere. These schools were the model for other artillery schools throughout Europe, including Woolwich in Great Britain and Budweiss in Austria. The French technical schools were the best in Europe.
