Kevin, the sources are Hill's papers at the British Library. When he told his parents he wanted a career in the army his father purchased his commission and then arranged for him to go to Strasbourg to get some military education. He was on leave from his regiment during this period. He was at Strasbourg for two short stretches in 1790/1 before the situation in France forced him to return to his regiment. I just wanted to be a bit more specific as to the institution as the existing biographies just say 'a military academy in Strasbourg.' I have come across another of Wellington's generals also going there but can't recall which at the moment.
