Meneval's Description of Napoleon
In Response To: A description of Napoleon ()

The Napoleon Meneval knew:

'Napoleon was of medium height (five feet two inches) [French measurement]; at the time when I was attached to h is cabinet, he enjoyed vigorous health...He had then a slight stoutness that was later developed by frequent baths...His neck was a little short...He had a wide, high forehead, searching gray eyes, a straight, well-formed nose, fine teeth, the curve of his mouth perfectly drawn...His skin was without color, but of a transparent paleness beneath which life could be seen circulating. His fine chestnut hair was then cut short...The shape of his face and the whole of his features were of irreproachable regularity. When he was moved by some violent passion, his fact took on a severe expression...his eyes shot lightening bolts...In its normal state, his face was calm, somewhat serious. It lit up with the most gracious smile when a good mood was on him or when he wished to be agreeable. Among intimates, his laughter was loud and mocking.'
