My interest is only in wondering why he put on weight to such a marked extent in middle life. It was either a metabolic disorder - which Hans-Karl discounts - or a more marked change in his lifestyle than has generally been supposed. The weight gain was an observable fact and the cause of it may have some bearing on other aspects of his career and possibly on the decline in his fortunes.
