The sound of the shell in flight and whirring of the fragments is very evocative but I have the impression these are shells designed to explode on impact, rather than common shell of the earlier period. Is that correct?

I don't know. Since in this video all the shells seem to explode right in the moment they touch either the ground or the vehicle, you are probably right.
