I concur, but my experience is that the immediacy this gives makes people even more immoderate. I think all fora need to strike a balance between liveliness and decorum. I remember the letters page of Journal of The Waterloo Association ceased, allegedly due to the exchanges between the Late Duke and a certain litigious anglo-austrian.

Forums are increasingly unearthing research sources though, and unlike scholarly articles that persist, are intrinsicly fragile. Their database driven nature means that archives such as The Wayback Machine may record topics, but sadly not the detailed contents itself.

With that in mind, I think that it is beholden on any of us that hosts any such content to provide for it's transfer or disposal. Universities and libraries have traditionally undertaken the custodianship of collections of written documents and journals. Is it time for them to underwrite the same for more modern media, perhaps with some kind of 'living will' agreement with the current owners?
