Re: A Peninsular War Mystery -> rabbis?

That's interesting, all the more since 'Tora' and 'Torah' are correct spellings in Spanish.

But Jews did not have the right to stay in Spain until 1852. An attempts by the ministry of trade will result in an ordonance of Felipe IV, confirming the exclusion of 1492. Even in Gibraltar the agreement with UK denied the right of burial for Jews - and the first jewish cimetery was conceled on the south face of the Rock.

Similarly, all Jews were supposed "converted" in Portugal since 16th, although "new christians" were often accused of secret practice of jewish ritual, and used as scapegoat in time of political crisis (three were burnt after Lisbon earthquake of 1755 in an 'auto-da-fe", act of faith).

So there is little chance to find a group of jewish priests at spanish frontier, although expelling some "new christians" as jacobin spies could suit the locals. And what would have a protestant british officer to do with such business ?
