In case I remember correctly it was Scherer who was the architect of victory in late 1795, Boney just took over command when the re shuffle of the French Army was over and the French Armies of 1796 were much different to those in the early years of 1792 - 94 /95.
Boney was lucky - again - to have such excellent and trusted generals like Augereau and Massena serving with him. Also Austria could not deal with two French offensives on two different theatres of war - or let us say three, two in Germany and one in Italy, without the German ones, Boney would be stopped for sure.
So one has to see the global strategic situation of 1796 as well, Boney arrived at the right time and took his chance and made the best out of it, Boney would have failed in Italy in 1794 as well.
