Such acts were not justyfied even in the Napoleonic times, to herd civilians into a church and burn it, neither torture civilians nor rape them.

this is a hair splitting discussion about laws, like there is no law to brun civilians therefore it is no crime? People living in the Napoleonic time did regard it as attrocity, barbarism or whatever.

I fully share the sentiments of our Portuguese colleage, the whole discussion is appaling.

The Portuguese and Spanish were attacked, they had the right and also the guts to defend themselves by all means. Now the victims seem to be criminals?
