There are two books, that I have not yet read as I’ve only just learned of their existence, that look (respectively and comparatively) at Napoleon’s impact on Europe and Napoleon’s strategy for the occupation and subjugation of European states.
Alexander Grab, Napoleon and the transformation of Europe, Palgrave, Basingstoke and New York, 2003; and Michael Rowe (ed.) Collaboration and resistance in Napoleonic Europe: state formation in an age of upheaval, 1800-1815, Palgrave, Basingstoke and New York, 2003.
I think they may shed some light on this subject – I don’t think it’s one dimensional: not even in Spain and Portugal!
