Certainly that is an interesting observation that certainly needs comment upon. The 17th and 18th century carriages are splayed towards the rear. This was carried on with the Gribeauval carriages.

By the 1780s most countries that had overhauled their carriage design had chosen the parallel cheeks as the best design. This trend was probably started by the Saxons in the 1770s.
