Well, my point is that since the loss of Haïti to its freed population, and even more with the loss of Weather islands to the english, french slaver and Napoleon was not part of the picture anymore.

It seems unrealistic to charge Laffite (no connection with the banker, nor with Napoleon) with oversea slave empire, when England had the high hand on the whole region, and fighted trade but not ownership of slaves, and before USA put any restriction to slave trade,
You can find the part taken of the privateers to the defence of New Orleans in "Louisiana 1815 - Osprey". It is important, but not decisive.

For a more accurate source of inspiration, see for example the historical novels of Madison Smart Bell. "Master of the Crossroads" is the best summary I have read in the political, social and strategical situation during the Haïti liberation war.
