Seeing that Napoleon's Grande Armee of 1813 is a biography of an army, it is readily apparent that Mr Hemmann did not read the Preface, or simply forgot what it said. In either case, he blatantly misrepresents my work as being a rehash of Thiers, et al. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Outside the appendices---the source of those drawn exclusively from the French archives---of the 891 footnotes in the book, 428 were a result of research from 87 different cartons at the French army archives at Vincennes. The majority of the remainder of the footnotes were from Napoleon's Correspondance, which is essential in documenting the reconstructing the creation and difficulties involving the French army of 1813. And for the record, Thiers was cited once---once---in the book, and that was for the purposes of campaign narrative.
