Re: Bloody Fields of Waterloo

I am always amazed at the rounds that missed. I recall that 450 rounds per death has been recorded for a Peninsular battle.

Stephen:

Something that I think is forgotten in those kinds of statistics, is the rate of fire skirmishing, generally at longer ranges than volley fire. During the Jena campaign for instance, the only units reporting that they 'ran out of ammo' were light units like the 17th Legere, which did so at both Saalfeld and Jena. The same was true of Tauentzien's Prussian light troops at Jena. Throughout the wars, one of the major concerns in using infantry as skirmishers was how quickly, and often times wastefully, they fired off all their ammo.

Unfortunately , how many rounds were shot of in skirmishing before, during and after a battle, at long distances is impossible to calculate.
