There might be a parallel--at least in terms of N's interest in not placing troops in unhealthy situations unnecessarily--in Italy during the early months of 1809: he enjoined Eugene not to leave winter quarters early and not to concentrate in the alpine areas near the Austrian border (1) to avoid provoking Vienna and (2) to avoid inclement weather.
