In 1790, only white male adult property-owners had the right to vote--about 10 to 16 percent of the U.S. population. Voting rights were something that only expanded gradually. Women only got the vote in 1920 in the U.S.. In 2012, 5.85 million felons were barred from voting in states with felony disenfranchisement. In Florida, more than a fifth of potential African American voters are barred from voting.
