Jacqueline - thank you. I did not know of the Breihan & Caplan article on the militia although I have read a couple of articles by Caplan on Henry Austen and found them very useful.

Have you seen John Cookson's The British Armed Nation, 1793-1815 (Oxford, 1997) and the various articles he has done? Also Kevin Linch's Britain and Wellington's Army. Recruitment, Society and Tradition (Palsgrave, 2011)? Both very useful, but rather 'top down', and I was hoping to find something a little more 'bottom up' - but the Breihan and Caplan may well set me on that road.
