I had a closer look at his signature and note that while the ‘p-r-y’ are connected, the ‘e’ stands alone? Also someone had identified the name as ‘Spry’.

As Oliver and Hans have noted for the army lists, the same changes in spelling of names occurs in the British Army lists.
