Rob,
Good question. All I have found is in Terry Crowdy's 'Napoleon's Infantry Handbook' P108. Since the middle ages White flags were for surrender or parley. Black for all out warfare or epidemics and Red for revolt. So I would say white was the most likely colour used in Europe. Paul
