I think expert opinion on authenticity can be valuable but opinion on content is only worthwhile from someone who has analysed an individual memoir in detail.

It's not too difficult to discover that Thiebault (for instance) attacks a great many reputations but looking at each case to see whether what he said was justified takes a lot longer. Marbot's tendency to exaggeration is obvious but working out where he is actually making things up takes research. Also, not everyone who published under the Bourbons had a royalist slant: Savary is one example, his memoirs were being read at court.

Lazy generalisations about 'unreliability' are unhelpful.
