Hello, all;
I've been intrigued by all the responses regarding Crown forces in Ireland during our period.
I wonder if anyone has ever seen a good OB of the various Crown forces in the spring of 1798. It would have to be a whopper, as I can think of line, yeomanry, fencible, and militia units, in all three branches. What units, where, and how many men? And of course all that is complicated by the fragmented deployment of so many units; there were companies, even platoons, sprinkled all across the island, wherever a magistrate howled for help.
Maybe there is some great document stored deep in the stacks at Kew, but I don't think I've ever seen such a complication.
It would be so interesting, I think, to attempt to wargame the what-ifs of the '98. Perhaps random popular force risings, based on county? Add the French.....what an fun project.
Any suggestions?
Hoping all are well, and happy......Mark
