Re: Interesting lack of consistancy in sources

Hi George
like the previous episode ... what's the truth ?
Here the horsemen were pressed in a town, between houses (if I understood well) and, if so, it was a nightmare for cavalry.
I presume you’re be speaking about Sept. 15 battle of San Giorgio. The following is another version:

“Part of the right wing was totally cancelled from the battlefield. 3 Cuirassiers sqns., 1 and half Ulans sqns, and 3 coys of the Deutsch Banater Grenzer, which had the way blocked between San Giorgio’s suburbs (occupied by Victor) and the reserve troops of Massena, were surrounded and put weapons onto the ground. Many other soldiers of the right wing launched themselves into the lake and drowned, while some were rescued by the vessels.”

This is in Von Erdmanssdorff bearb. “Der Feldzug von 1796 in Italien” Magdeburg 1847.
If I could know which Austrian cavalry engaged the 18e demi-brigade, if you want, I could try to search in the Austrians regimental histories
