The main source was an article by Johann Baptist Schels:

vor Mantua" in Streffleurs Ö.M.Z. jahr 1832/vol. 1, S. 3, 111
but you can also see in:
Koch, Mémoires de Masséna, Tome II, Pieces justificatives n. XX pag. 501 (Masséna report) - Paris Paulin et Lechevalier, Paris 1848.
"L'adjudant-général Leclerc, votre aide-de-camp Marmont, le capitaine Pinau, commandant le 2e bataillon de la 18e, par leurs bonnes dispositions, ont arrêté 2 escadrons de cavalerie qui chargeaient ce bataillon et qui ont été mis en déroute".
Here the battalion was the second - not the third as in Marmont. Probably Austrian cavalry, in order to pass through the French lines, tried to force the entry into St. George and, charging, passed jumping "over" the French heads and went through the houses till the other side of the suburb, were they found Augereau troops.
