In 1804 the Guard consisted of one regiment of Grenadiers a Pied, one of Chasseurs a Pied (two battalions of eight companies each); one regiment of Grenadiers a Cheval, one of Chasseurs a Cheval which included a squadron of Mamelukes, and two companies of artillery a cheval and two train companies. There was also a battalion of sailors that that year as well as the Gendarmerie d'elite. So, the Guard was small, approximately 9,800 men.
