Son of Colonel Nicholas Bayly. Brother of Colonel Edward Bayly.

Ensign 85th Foot* 1783, Half-pay 1783-1790, Ensign 2nd Foot Guards 1790, Lieutenant & Captain 1793, Captain & Lieutenant-Colonel 1799, Brevet Colonel 1809, Major General 1812, Lieutenant General 1825, General 1841.

* disbanded 1783.

Early Service: Flanders 1793 and wounded, Ireland 1798, Helder 1799. Private Secretary to British Minister to court in Portugal 1808-1809. On Home Staff 1813-1814.

Peninsular War: Commanded an independent brigade of Provisional Militia February - April 1814.

Other Service: Governor of Guernsey 1816-1821.

ADC to Prince Regent 1809. Knighted 1834. GCH 1834. Colonel of the 8th Foot 1825-1846.
