" At the Bivouac on the heights of Jena.
" 13th October, 10 p.m.
"... Marshal Bernadotte has received orders to go to Dornburg. It is very important that he should have gone there. But if he should be at Naumburg that would make it the more necessary for you to execute forthwith the following orders, namely, to go to Appolda and to fall on the enemy's rear, if they should be engaged with us, as we expect they will. . . . You can take whatever route you find most convenient, but the important thing is that you should take part in the battle. If Marshal Bernadotte should be with you, you might march together. But the Emperor hopes that he will be in the position which he has indicated to him at Dornburg. (Si le Maréchal Bernadotte se trouve avec vous, vous pourrez marcher ensemble; mais l'Empereur espère qu'il sera dans la position qu'il lui a indiqué à Dornburg.) "

A 3 heures du matin, le 14, le maréchal Davout reçut à Naumburg un ordre du major général daté du bivouac d'Iéna, 10 heures du soir, qui portait en substance:

L'Empereur a reconnu l'armée prussienne sur les hauteurs entre léna et Weimar. Son intention est de se porter contre elle le lendemain. En conséquence, le 3e corps ira sur Apolda, dans le flanc de cette armée.

La dépêche ajoutait:

« Si le M. maréchal Bernadotte se trouve avec vous, vous pourrez marcher ensemble; mais l'Empereur espère qu'il sera dans la position qu'il lui a indiquée, à Dornburg.»
