In Gourgaud's journal he records an occasion when the after-dinner reading had been from the Gospels and on hitting the passage on divorce Napoleon turned to Mme Montholon and said 'This is for you Madame': Gourgaud thought, but did not say, that she must have wanted to reply 'For us, sire!'
It can be seen from these journals that though Napoleon said he didn't have as many mistresses as he was credited with he still repeatedly boasted about those he could claim.
