they shattered their lances at the cuirasses *LINK*

But I came accross this curious incident.

In the evenig of the battle of Ligny, near Sombreffe, a platoon of the 6. Kurmärkisches Landwehr-Kavallerie-Regiment (attached to the 12. Brigade) under Major v. Dorville attacked French cavalry, "however, his riders shattered their lances at the cuirasses of their opponents, and had to defend themselves with the lance shafts which had remained in their hands".

The lances were made of very bad wood, I dare say, or the Landwehr men had very strong arms.

This account was first publishd by Wagner, Plane, in 1825. It seems to have been taken from the report of the 12. Brigade, which probably also was the source for Damitz. In print, there are also reports in French and English of the same incident, which seem to have been translated from Damitz.
