Re: Portugal: a "nation in arms"
In Response To: Portugal: a "nation in arms" ()

Although reused by historians of late 19th century, Portugal as a nation in arm was a reality dating back from the wars against Spain.

Unable to put in the field a force comparable to the spanish regular army, Portugal had an organized system of militia, the Ordenanza, that was activated against the French invasion.

Efficient as proved by Colonel Grant small war, they were badly considered by Wellington, who according to Oman did not approve Grant's warfare.
