I share everyone's skepticism that Napoleon would simply cut down a fellow officer in front of others. As a younger and more hot-headed officer he never engaged in any duels or threats to duel a rival. So why would an older, more mature Napoleon lose his cool so drastically? The odds that there would be only a single, third-hand report from a civilian as the only evidence if it really happened are also infinitessimal.
