Re: Wellington and Uxbridge
In Response To: Wellington and Uxbridge ()

Paul

According to Lord Uxbridge he received no orders from Wellington regarding the cavalry. Uxbridge had complete control.

See Letter 3 in The Waterloo Letters, H.T. Siborne.

Gordon Corrigan, Waterloo: Wellington, Napoleon, and the Battle that Saved Europe discusses who gave the order. "There is dispute over who ordered the British heavy cavalry to charge. Lord Uxbridge insisted it was done entirely on his initiative, without any prompting from Wellington."

Gregory Fremont-Barnes, Waterloo 1815: The British Army's Day of Destiny agrees with Uxbridge's account.

Good hunting.
