Given the defensive nature of the British position, was it not the standard role of the cavalry to form up behind the infantry and then attack (charge?) any French unit that broke through. I always assumed the charge was a responsive movement which would not require orders from the commander in chief.
The fact that they lost control and the defensive manoeuvre was turned into an offensive attack on the main French line was clearly not envisaged or sanction by either commander.
