Thank you, Susan. I appreciate your comments. I think there was a rather unseemly grab for resources. Championnet (who comes across as something of an idealist commanding some of the more grasping commanders) doing it for the Army, Faipoult for himself and, perhaps, if there was anything left, for Paris. Championnet might have acted thus to ensure his troops could function in what I think he hoped would be the conquest of the rest of the kingdom. But it all broke down into squabbling.

Both parties should share the blame and the unfortunate outcome was that the new Neapolitan republic was largely impoverished before it could even begin to rule.
