You are probably right. Prince August told that at Prenzlau the first rank didn't fire at all.
If the first rank knelt, men had difficulties with reloading. So, the fire of the first rank was reserved to the most critical situation.
In the Russian armies fighting against the Turks, the first rank knelt until 1809 or 1810.
