A somewhat different version of events is given in With Eagles to Glory by Jack Gill, page 326-327, with an endnote on page 373, number 10. Bisson's 2500 men were newly inducted conscripts with little training and ammunition and Bisson had no intention of committing them to combat until they were ready. Bisson was no coward. He had been one of Ney's division commanders at Friedland in June 1807.

Regarding Chasteler, he was proscribed by Napoleon on 5 May 1809 for being 'the author of the massacres committed on the Bavarian and French prisoners by the insurgents.' It was ordered that if he was captured he would be brought before a military commission and if necessary shot for his offenses 'within 24 hours.'
