Digby, what is your timeline for more info?
Looked into this in great detail some years ago (but not updated with the Quinlin info the excellent Mr. von Bahr located) and happy to share results, but cannot do so for some weeks.
As noted there were two columns of replacements, each of approx. same strength:
- Bisson
- Lemoine
Bisson we know; his column made its way to Innsbruck where it was captured along with the city's Bavarian garrison (11th Inf Regt).
There is little doubt that someone named "Lemoine" (or "Lemoyne") commanded the second column. Whether this was the major Mr. von Bahr found (and the general quality of the Quinlin's research speaks for this) or GD Louis Lemoine is not totally certain.
GD Lemoine: The 'situation' for the entire empire places GD Lemoine in Paris in Feb/March 1809. Whether he was given a temporary mission before assuming his post as commandant of Wesel (assigned 9 March 1809) is possible, though seems a stretch. He had served in Italy before, so perhaps his name came to mind.
Maj. Lemoine: his regt (15e Chasseurs) was in Spain, but its depot was in Italy, so perhaps he was with the depot in spring 1809 and received the task of leading these replacements to Massena's 4e Corps in Germany even though none of his regt were in either column.
In either case, the name "Lemoine" more/less disappears from accounts after this initial foray, so either GD Lemoine headed off to Wesel after April (he was in Wesel by 15 May 1809) or Maj. Lemoine remained with the forces in Italy, but, being a mere major, his name fell out of the general accounts (this seems possible as he was promoted to command the 14e Chasseurs, which was in Germany/Austria in 1809).
