Re: Organization of the Brunswick Oels in 1810

Hi Rod

Williams was placed in command of what was effectively the brigade of light battalions from 1st and 3rd Divs, plus the 2/83rd. Woodgate took over command of the 3rd Div light companies, possibly when Williams was given command in the village, but certainly when after Williams was wounded. After Williams was wounded command in the village moved to Cameron of the 79th who came with the reinforcements. I've not seen any evidence that 3rd Div had more than one light battalion.

I've just read you light companies article and it is very good. Interesting that Dodgkin of the 66th mention's Arroyomolinos when Byng's brigade was close but not actually present. Unless the light coys did get there but I've not seen any evidence of that.

The COs of 5/60th were often the commanders of the light battalion of the 3rd Div. Lt. Col John Fitzgerald and Lt. Col. John Galiffe both did so at various times after Williams left the Peninsula in July 1812. Colonel Keane, who Williams exchanged with, was given a brigade so probably never commanded the light battalion.

I do wonder what happened in brigades where there was a light infantry regiment - such as the 71st in Howard's brigade of the 2nd Div. Did they still contribute a company?

Regards

Rob
