Re: Poles
In Response To: Poles ()

Hello. Here is an interim reply.

In December 1813 two Imperial Decrees ordered the creation of three Eclaireur or scout regiments, each of four squadrons. Designed mainly to counter cossacks, these units were equipped with lances and each of the regiments was attached to an existing cavalry regiments in the Imperial Guard. Thus, the 3rd Eclaireur Regiment was attached to the 1er Cheveau-Legers Lanciers and their uniform was styled on the Polish pattern,

Personnel came from various sources, including the 1er Chevau Lanciers and Polish or French depots. Apparently, once ready, the unit was brigaded with the 1re Chevau Legers, the Krakus and the Lithuanian Tartars. They appear to have participated in a single action at Champaubert on 11 February 1814. Following Napoleon's abdication the Poles were released and returned to their homeland.

I still have to verify a few aspects of their history and will post what I find. There are also two prints by Gembarzewski showing their dress which I can post as well.

Thank-you,
