Like the other two regiments of eclaireurs, the 3rd was attached to an existing Guard cavalry regiment; in the case of the 3e Regiment d'Eclaireurs de la Garde Imperial, they were attached to the 1st Polish Light Horse. Both regiments served together in 1814.
In order to man this Polish regiment, Napoleon ordered the 1st Polish Light Horse to be reduced and the surplus men sent to the 3e Regiment d'Eclaireurs de la Garde Imperial. One source lists the squadron leaders as Wincenty Szeptycki, Ambrozy Skarzynski, Jozef Zaluski and Wasowicz, while the commanding officer was Jan Kozietulski. There were also seven French officers and two French surgeon-majors. Most of the men came from the Polish depot at Sedan.
The regiment was raised at the end of 1813 as Napoleon was rebuilding his army for the coming campaign, thus they only participated in the 1814 campaign in France. Following the abdication in 1814, they were released from service and went home.
