Lecor's actions: a bit too far?

Hi,

The orders were, as I understand it to “threaten an attack on the 31st”. Therefore to fully engage with the enemy, albeit successfully and then to be repulsed (with some loss) requiring supports to be brought up to ensure further losses were not incurred, if not in contravention of the general order, comprised actions that exceeded the remit of Wellington’s orders. So yes, a bit too far perhaps.

That Le Cor later commanded the 7th division suggests, to me, that responsibility for non-compliance with the orders was not necessarily attributed (solely) to him. I’m not 100% sure about seniority etc, perhaps Ron McGuigan can help here, but I’m fairly sure that the right to command the 7th division was not necessarily that of Le Cor purely by dint of seniority.

Best wishes

Ant
